The title of this group exhibition is derived from a fragment of the poem Gute Nacht by Wilhelm Müller, set to music by Franz Schubert in his song cycle Winterreise, Op. 89, D 911. The journey described is not only geographical, but also signifies a continuous state of being in transit, in which identity is only ever temporarily fixed.
Within A Stranger I Depart, a field unfolds in which personal and collective narratives intersect and destabilize one another. The practices of Justin Reinir Croes, Shaquina Karg, Renee Riebeek, and Martijn Verzijl articulate relational processes that continuously rewrite themselves. Rituals and materials, corn and annatto, function here as carriers of embodied knowledge and mythical resonance. Through their repetition and tactility, they open up a space in which individual memory becomes interwoven with larger, often non-linear histories.

Justin Reinir Croes explores identity, heritage, and the human condition through various art media using natural materials such as corn and annatto.
Shaquina Karg explores ritual acts and creates installations that address themes such as identity, transformation, death, and rebirth, using nature as a symbolic mirror.
Renée Riebeek explores the complexity of the human experience through films, drawings, performances, and installations, transforming everyday elements into alienating images.
Martijn Verzijl creates ceramic “vessels of memory” in which mythological and personal stories converge, inspired by ancient storytelling traditions.
