Lilia Scheerder

Lilia Scheerder

Schimmenrijk

Opening 24 Mar 2023, 20:00

24 Mar –

30 Apr 2023

Between claustrophobia, slapstick, and horror, Lilia Scheerder takes us on an exploration of the surreal. Her work delves into the soul of the home and its surroundings, transforming everyday spaces into places of wonder and estrangement. Scheerder is a graphic artist, performance and sound artist, filmmaker, photographer, organizer, and Drag King, weaving these disciplines into a continuous investigation of how image and experience can influence each other.

Silent film and analog media serve as a constant source of inspiration and are often combined with contemporary techniques to create new visual and auditory experiences. Buildings and interiors, as well as natural structures and the organized chaos of the universe, provide the fertile ground for her interdisciplinary practice. The resulting works range from graphics, drawings, and installations to film, photography, and performance, with each form contributing to an inquisitive perspective on the world that transcends the boundaries of realism.

Lilia Scheerder is a graphic artist, performance and sound artist, filmmaker, photographer, organizer, and Drag King. The exhibition Schimmenrijk presents recent work created during the pandemic. Scheerder felt more connected to nature, figments of the mind, and phantoms than to other people. Feelings of estrangement and the inability to feel at home in an unfamiliar world became central themes in her work. The ‘Water Bearer’, who leads her follower to a new world; the child, lost in the forest; the collapsing building with a secret behind every corner.

“The phantoms from my dreams linger on my retina like black-and-white shadows from a distant past projected onto the white screen. That distant past is both endlessly far away and more tangible than the person standing next to me.”
