Through his sculptures, oil paintings, pen drawings, and preliminary studies, Eindhoven-based artist Rob Looman explores themes of irrationality and illogic. Looman expresses societal themes, social interaction, and his fascination with life in general. By creating spatiality without precedent, yet striving for a form of realism in landscapes of Mao and steel sculptures, he creates a dynamic overview.
In an era where software, algorithms, and artificial “intelligence” shape large parts of our reality, Looman finds urgency in the way he questions daily reality as a given. While algorithms attempt to predict and control our thoughts, this “absurdist” embraces precisely the unpredictable and seemingly irrational. Within the oil paintings, sculptures, and dioramas, absurdist dialogues take place between the depicted characters.

Rob Looman studied at the Eindhoven Academy of Industrial Design from 1993 to 1996. His work has been exhibited at venues, including TAC Eindhoven, De Cacaofabriek in Helmond, MAMA Rotterdam, De Pont in Tilburg, and the Livingstone Gallery in The Hague. He currently lives and works in Eindhoven.
