De Wereld Bij Benadering

De Wereld Bij Benadering

Ad van Campenhout, Ronald Cornelissen, Anne-Marie van Sprang, Martin & Inge Riebeek

Opening 14 Jan 2024, 16:00

14 Jan –

11 Feb 2024

Ad van Campenhout considers his abstract-looking drawings as “a residue of attempts” to capture the world in reminiscences, memories, references, and also sorrow over the nearly impossible task he has set for himself. The works on display originate from a visit to the Fort de Vaux near Verdun, a WWI monument symbolizing soldiers who fulfilled their duty.

The installation Wake Up! by Martin & Inge Riebeek results in eight video portraits: Saifudin, who fled Afghanistan with his family to escape the Taliban; Hans in Paris, who barely survived the Bataclan attack; and Laura, who fights for the Aboriginal homeland. These individuals share their personal stories on camera in three to four minutes, offering a view of the other and what is essential to them. In creating their video portraits, the artist duo was inspired by the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas, in which “the Other” gives meaning to our existence.

Through elements drawn from both high and low culture, Ronald Cornelissen explores themes such as our increasingly complex relationship with nature and related issues like the conflict between rationalism and mysticism, and their socio-political implications. The works shown are inspired by the historical term Hyperborea, the Greek designation for a mythical northern paradise where the sun was said to shine twenty-four hours a day.

Anne-Marie van Sprang observes the world slowly, taking her time. Her eyes play a game with her imagination. The same observation can take on a different quality in the next moment. In the work De sneeuw voor de zomer (The Snow Before Summer), these include, among others, a hanging lamp, a light bulb, a diabolo with sticks, a funnel, and a catapult. Her spatial installations are built from fragile porcelain objects that reference everyday reality.
